My best sleep was my LAX-ORD|JFK|EWR on a red-eye ... I couldn't sleep for more then 2-3 hours a night, and when I moved to Texas all hell broke loose with my allergies.
Went in for a sleep study, and remember the guy rushing in saying holy fuck. I had 57 events an hour.
I had been living like this for 15 plus years, lets say I am a stubborn SOB.
I now sleep 6-8 hours solid with a CPAP and sleep beautifully. The funny thing was I had to relearn how to sleep, and it took one year to go from 2 to 4-5 hours, then another year to break 6hr, and another 2 years to get to where I am at now.
So I feel ya, and life does get wickedly better ... trust me (and I have the data to back it up ...)
So if they wanted to use sleep deprivation as torture, well ... bring it on baby :)
As for the medical aspects, if I combine the sleep stuff with the allergies with the American Medical system, I have dropped nearly $200K via insurance and co-pays …
