Not UK based but US ... Up until 1980, trucking was a regulated service where at the time a trucker could earn up to $110K. Then it got deregulated and even better pay was earned by the mile.
Then (drum roll) limits to how much a person could drive along with how fast happened, and now truckers earn on average 1/2 of that in the 2020s.
Smell an issue?
There is a labor shortage (duh) well guess what society deprioritized family "making" and as such at least in America, Gen X is not enough to cover the consumption and entitlements of the Boomers.
And America as one knows does not have a bountiful social net either, so that shows how bad it really is.
Businesses (brilliant MBAs which could be considered the end of western civilization) who pontificated Just In Time and outsourcing because of you know ... the ability to drive the cost down based upon the backs of slaveish labor, and powered up by unions of the ports for ships and urban centers, now have a big supply chain ripple.
We can't outsource inflation anymore, and the big toxic black hole that has existed and grew since the 1980s is now here in full force. Remember these manufacturing and management decisions which were born from GE and Six Sigma .... now are showing their epic downside.
Now if we are to fix it (in the US) where the wage floor (minimum wage) hasn't gone up in a decade or so) and omits the "great gains of productivity", in theory at minimum needs to be at $15/hour (adust for the pound as a reference), well that means skilled labor needs to increase in kind. That means the $18-$20/hour needs to go up into the low to mid $30's, and where does that come from?
The cost of the good, which will then cause inflation to massively spike, require incomes to be raised, and it means the government is like oh yeah baby, we need to tax you more, so in reality you need to earn $40 to get the $30 that $20 got you in 2019.
The UK has as you smartly called out ... crimped it's labor supply so if it has the same age dynamics of the USA, it just got epically worse ...
