Note: I am a white guy so I sit in the middle of this shit storm ....
I work in high tech, spent considerable time in the Bay Area, and my perspective is there are a lot of men, and I found myself working a lot with Indian and Asian men.
There were numerous times, since I was friendly I was invited to go to lunch and other meals, where I was the only white guy.
Now, what I will tell you is the upper management was heavily skewed in the proportions you talk too. Also my current company which is based on the east coast has quite a few white folks.
But what normally happens in this country is quite a bit of the work gets outsourced to India and other other places.
Should it be more diverse across the board? Definitely, I know my company hired diversity and other aspects and quite a bit of funding came to clean up the code with unsavory phrases and other things. The problem though is even though the bug bounty happened and things were cleaned up productivity actually faltered, and layoffs happened.
Those that survive this high tech madness have to work akin to China's 996 52 weeks out of the year for decades.
One can feel free to not work like that; however, what happens then is when the reaper comes for your paycheck ... swoosh there it goes.
So one might say the high tech environment is built around the view of a white male perspective, where you have to give up family, friends and all of your time to work for the "man".
To give you an idea of 2022 for me ...
I have had the chance to have 4 weekends off this year. When we went to go get an embyro that was created down in Dallas on Sunday Morning, I was working on code in the car while she drove.
High-Tech and dot-com life can be a very toxic enviornment; however, it is one that pays exceedingly well.
I do agree with you 100% diversity and other aspects are critical in today's life and these areas should have better representation.
But from what I have seen the only thing that matters in these environments is "the green" of the dollars of the business. Whomever is aggressive enough wins. Also, the people / VCs that own the money are all white men, so one might need to look at these areas first if a trickle down (ha) of social economics is to happen.
IS that healthy? Fuck no, but lets be real, there are many countries and places that will undercut us economically any way to gain power and money.
My proof? PPE Masks, Medical Saline, screws for computers (Apple e.g.), and now we can call out Baby Formula.
We can demand it and we should, but folks will also need to realize that we will need to pay more and more for it.
As for social media ... you and me are not the customers, we are the product.
As for hiring, I have had to interview dozens of people, care to guess the demographic?
Indian male, no white, no black, no females ...
Things are broken and they do need to change, that I agree with you.
