When my wife and I bounced from apartment to apartment we used the box and garbage bag theory of moving.

All the important things went into suitcases and boxes, the less critical garbage bags.

When we moved again, if we didn't take the stuff out of the garbage bag it went into the garbage or goodwill.

On our last move from the Midwest to Texas, we actually left nearly everything to the mother-in-law (my POV) and literally started "fresh-ish". We did take some things (like my collection of Starbucks mugs and other small knick-knacks but started fresh.

Let me tell you ... very very helpful. Then over the period of a few more years, I started to pitch things from bags and boxes ...
